Llerena
The town of Llerena is almost 40km east of Zafra on the Cordoba road.
The population is a little under 6,000 people and there are a good selection of shops and businesses in the town. Llerena is also home to a good hospital.
At the heart of Llerena is the Plaza de Espana, surrounded by some impressive buildings, including the church with a stunning tower that is an ideal navigation aid when strolling around the town.
The balconies on the church facing the plaza have been described as being used for both spectating of bull fighting and the burning of witches. Llerena was an important centre of the Spanish Inquisition, whilst the nearby village of Villagarcia de la Torre offered protection to many who the Order of Santiago considered witches.
To the north of Llerena, the landscape extends to the horizon in flat plains, whilst to the south the land turns to hills. The new road through this area takes you to the A66 at Monesterio which brings Seville within an hour and a half.
